Cemetery

Right at the entrance of the cemetery, on the top of the main gate, is the shield with the Griffin, a mythological animal half eagle and half lion that is also present on the coat of arms and flag of Sa Pobla. It is the same image found atop the chapel that presides over the cemetery, built between 1886 and 1888, although the cemetery was moved from the center of Sa Pobla to the outskirts of the town at the beginning of the 19th century.

The chapel is a simple and small structure, featuring stained glass windows on its sides. The space is dominated by the figure of the Virgin of Sorrows.

It is an exact replica of the statue found in the church of the Charterhouse of Valldemossa. The construction of the cemetery, from its beginnings to today, was done in several phases.

During the works of one of the expansions, it was decided to build a basement, a corridor that crosses the cemetery below and houses some of the graves. These constructions are not very common in Mallorca's cemeteries.

Among the most notable neighbors buried in the Sa Pobla cemetery are the remains of politician Miquel Socies i Caimari, who was the driving force behind the arrival of the train in Sa Pobla; those of the former official chronicler of Sa Pobla, playwright Alexandre Ballester, or footballer Luis Alberto Díaz Rebaneira, also known as Chango Díaz or the White Pelé.
