Plaça Major

Until the end of the 19th century, there were two squares separated by a block of nine small houses in the middle: the 'des Vaumar' square and the 'sa Quartera' square. Above the latter, they built the town hall building, also known as 'Quartera'. It was originally the house where cereals and legumes were stored and sold.

Later, the rear part of the town hall would be named 'plaça de la Constitució'. The progressive growth of the population, especially after the draining of s'Albufera (1862-1871) and the arrival of the train, boosted the Sunday market and caused the two old squares to become too small. In July 1887, the construction of the current Plaça Major was agreed upon, with Joan Serra i Caimari as mayor.

The works were carried out gradually and completed in 1897. In 1914, the current plane trees were planted. In 1910, a first catafalque was inaugurated.

The current catafalque dates from 1931-32. The last renovation of Plaça Major was carried out in 1991.
